The Houston Chapter, Association of Legal Administrators is a separate legal entity from the Association of Legal Administrators (ALA). ALA licenses the use of its name, mark, logos and other protected properties to chapters which are in good standing. ALA disclaims all liability or responsibility whatsoever for the actions, representations and liabilities of the Houston Chapter, Association of Legal Administrators, specifically including those of any nature whatsoever arising from or out of the content or other features related to the Houston Chapter, Association of Legal Administrators web site. Regular membership in the Houston Chapter of ALA is open to any individual employed full-time in the management of legal organizations. One must first join ALA International before becoming eligible to join the Houston Chapter. Other levels of membership include associate and life members as defined in the Bylaws.

The basic requirements for regular membership in both the Houston Chapter and ALA International include the following:

  1. Exercise management responsibilities on a full-time basis or, if not full-time, spend 75% or more of their time performing the management responsibilities of the position;
  2. Manage others or manage an important function which renders high-level services to the organization;
  3. Occupy a position which involves the exercise of independent judgment without close daily supervision, and;
  4. Be employed in a position which is or is eligible to be classified as exempt, by a single legal organization such as a private law firm, legal service clinic, corporate legal department, university legal department governmental legal agency, court system, charitable legal agency, or some other organization engaged primarily in the practice of law.
Both the Houston Chapter and the ALA International tailor educational programs and skills training specifically for administrators involved in the legal profession in addition to providing a supportive environment.
